AutoCAD Standards Recommendations 1
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendations are designed to generate a foundation for proceeding with the IWMS implementation. [CLIENT NAME] should review and approve these recommendations prior to the IWMS implementation. Existing conventions should be presented to RSC for inclusion into this document.
Drawing Set-up
RSC will separate each floor into three separate drawings in a nested Xreference (Xref) containing layers as follows:
- The AB (architectural) drawing will contain the layers and drawing entities or blocks for the architectural building shell and core and tenant improvements.
- The IB (interior) drawing will contain the layers and drawing entities or blocks for the movable furniture and equipment
- The FM (facilities) drawing will contain the asset layers for the polylines delineating the space and the blocks for equipment that will be the link to the Archibus database.
Nested Xref’s will be used to combine each of the FM drawings. The FM Drawing is the main drawing containing a Xref of the IB drawing that contains a Xref of the AB drawing. Each IB and FM drawing will contain a layer named Xref. For Example, the IB drawing will contain a layer named Xref that contains the insertion point for the AB drawing and the FM drawing will contain a layer named Xref that will contain the insertion point for the IB drawing.
This will allow flexibility when working through a reconfiguration. While rearranging the blocks in the IB drawing the AB will be Xrefed and provide visual clues for standards conformance. Conversely, while designing tenant improvements the AB drawing stands alone. The FM drawing will only need to Xref the IB to see the Architectural and Interior configuration.
File Naming Convention
The file naming convention that RSC recommends and uses for the Archibus are as follows.
The file names for all plan drawings shall be derived from the building code as established in the IWMS Population Recommendations Report and shall adhere to the following convention:
(See Appendix A: DRAWING NAMES)
The specific drawing names for the floor plans shall conform to the following eight-character naming convention and three-character file extension.

LAYERING CONVENTION
It is recommended that [CLIENT NAME] drawings shall use the following primary layers. Layers for as-built elements are based on AIA guidelines. Layers used for space tracking are based on the standards included with ARCHIBUS. The IB and the FM drawing will also contain an Xref layer that contains the Xreferenced drawing for the nested Xreference. RSC will also evalutate each drawing for layering consistency and make appropriate layer changes in order to work optimally with the ARCHIBUS database.
The following layering conventions were derived from the AIA CAD Standards. Additional layers shown in the AIA Standards but not shown here are permitted as long as the color and linetype settings are cleared with [CLIENT NAME]’s Facilities Department. Either all long or all short layer names may be used, but not a combination of both.
The layer list is divided into eight major groups, each group having building information layers and drawing information layers.

CONCLUSION
The above standards were designed to ensure a smooth operation of the ARCHIBUS database with the properly set up AutoCAD floorplan drawings. The strict adherence to these standards will help to ensure proper performance and retrieve accurate data from the ARCHIBUS database.
